A Rare American Southern Silver Six-Piece Tea SetS&B Brower, New Orleans, 1834-1842
Comprising
1 coffee pot
2 tea pots
Covered sugar bowl
Creamer
Waste bowl
Lobed bodies and bases
Acanthus scrolling handles
Coffee and teapots with flower spray finials
all with monogram EPL, and all but creamer inscribed Shalle.
Marked on base S. & B. Brower, 17 Camp St. New Orleans
One of the tea pots is missing it’s handle
The tea set was passed down in the Laffoon family. The initials EPL are for Emily Powell (Allen) Laffoon. Her father-in-law was Polk Laffoon II who was the cousin of Ruby Laffoon, 1869-1941 of Madisonville, Hopkins Co., Kentucky, Governor of Kentucky, who became infamous for imposing a sales tax during the Depression in 1832, which however did help restore the State’s finances. He is also remembered for giving a Colonel’s commission to Harlan Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
