Today we are pleased to offer for sale a beautiful and very rare piece of antique repousse English/Dutch/French/Continental Silver. This chocolate pot is 800 grade silver and heavily decorated with embossed symbols as well as a Roman Mystical scene. The piece is hallmarked on the right side of spout and additionally inside inner lip of lid (please see photo).
The front decoration features a scene from Roman Tauroctony, Mithras slaying a bull with perhaps the updated (Christian) addition of an angel. The balance of the body of the pot is decorated with a very ornate pattern of leaves, scrolls, flowers, flourishes and birds. The spout features the likeness of a faunus, half man-half goat with large ram's horns. The lid is fluted on the sides and finished with the same scroll pattern. The finial on the lid is a bear-like creature on a pedestal holding a shield which has been engraved with an "R". The scrolling handle is also quite ornate and finishes at the bottom with the head of a rooster.
Piece presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear/scuffing, tarnish and patina commensurate with age and light use. One dent is present on the base. The finial on the pot's lid has a slight bend to it that does not affect use, and the hinge pin connecting lid to pot may have been replaced at one point. Please review all photos.
