1901 3pc English Sterling Silver Large Tea Set Hand Chased Grape Design L Mono
Presented is a fabulous English sterling silver three piece tea set. This set dates to 1901. The set is made in a lovely older style, featuring hand chased decoration in the form of clusters of grapes, grape leaves, and vines. The chased decoration is very well done, all against a finely stippled background. The grape motif is continued, with each piece having a finial in the form of a cluster of grapes. The teapot and creamer both have double scroll form handles. The teapot is particularly ornate, with a spout in the form of a bird's head and neck and a bold classical Greco-Roman god type decoration where the spout joins the body. Each piece has four cartouches, one on each side of the body, two larger and two smaller. Each piece has a Gothic L monogram in one cartouche, with the other cartouches being blank. The set is a good large size and very well made, each piece has a nice feeling of weight and quality in the hand. The teapot in particular is quite large, with a capacity of 8 cups, or 64 fluid ounces / 1.89 liters.
The set consists of:
Teapot—12 ¾ inches tall.
Creamer—7 7/8 inches tall.
Sugar—7 3/8 inches tall, 6 ½ inches in diameter.
This set is in great overall condition. The creamer has a repair to the finial, but this was professionally done and is hard to notice. There are no splits, no dents, no leaks, no monogram removals, and no other repairs.
Each piece is hallmarked on the side with the lion passant for sterling silver, the anchor for the city of Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901, and the maker's mark HB likely for Henry Bourne. The sugar bowl is also hallmarked on the lip of the lid with the maker's mark, lion passant, and date letter. Both the pot and the creamer are hallmarked on the underside of the lid with the lion passant and date letter. Even the nuts holding the finials to the lids of the pot and sugar are hallmarked with the lion passant.
The total weight for the set is 2438 grams or 86 regular ounces.
